How is it possible to read a lie? In a one-on-one situation a lie might be
betrayed by a telltale nervous tic. Liars will often avoid direct eye contact
with the person to whom they are speaking. Alternately, if the individual
in question is a pathological liar, there might be nary a hint of subterfuge
whatsoever. In fact, this type of sociopath might fabricate an elaborate
web of lies whilst projecting an aura of utter normalcy.

It is sometimes just plain hard to tell when a person is not being truthful.

Things are rarely better when lies are put forth on behalf of a state. Russia
is currently governed by the well-trained liar, Vladimir Putin. A leader who
in the past has spoken in praise of democracy, market capitalism, and the
new era of friendship and cooperation with the West. All the while, as he
steadily consolidates his grip on power in the Kremlin and neutralizes all
that might oppose his return to the authoritarian ways of Cold War-era
 Russia.

Vladimir Putin is a major disappointment to those who once judged his
youth and non-combative public demeanor in a favorable light, as if that
alone would guarantee that the Soviet State would never return, bringing
along with it the darkness of unrepentant repression of the popular will.

Putin clearly is not what he at first appeared. He was a false hope.
Putin is KGB to the core. It is in his DNA. The five-year plans may be gone
forever. But this man will never be a champion of free speech, individualism,
personal liberty, and the rule of law.

In neighboring Ukraine what could have been a simple exercise in democracy
has also revealed a dirty lie. The lie was that this former satellite of the old
Soviet Union would allow the people to decide the fate of their nation.
In the East Ukraine the sentiment was with the current Prime Minister and
pro-Russian candidate, Viktor Yanukovych. He is Putin's boy. The Soviet
premier went to great lengths to strengthen Yanukovych's candidacy and
 ensure his return to office.

In the West Ukraine, the popular sentiment is to move further away from the
influence of their powerful neighbor. Ukrainians in the western part of the
country want to integrate with Europe. If not merely culturally, but politically
as well. They've had enough of Russian influence and the dark shadow of
repression that has returned, at Putin's whim.

The lie in the Ukraine was that the people would be allowed to decide the
direction their nation would take in the new millennium. But this was only
a delusion. In the Ukraine - as in Russia - powerful men regard democracy
and popular sufferage as a mortal enemy. The people of the Ukraine would
have their election. But, the outcome would be fixed. Yanukovych would
quickly be declared the winner and would have Godfather Putin at his side
 to further enhance his standing.

The elections were an abominable sham. And thus began the Orange
Revolution. The people of Ukraine would not stand by silently while their
rights were trampled upon, and the outcome of the election manipulated
 by unseen hands.

How afraid of a true plebiscite were Vladimir Putin and his crony, Yanukovych?
There is no need to look any farther than Viktor Yushchenko's dioxin-scarred
 face.
