 The Whitney Houston Interview

There have been a swirl of ugly rumors around soul diva Whitney
Houston for a quite a number of years, now. Is she a drug user? Is
her marriage to Bobby Brown a sham? Is she anorexic or emotionally
 troubled in some other way?

Why anyone who is not a close personal friend or relative of Whitney
Houston would care about the answer to those questions is beyond
the comprehension of yours truly. But there is a multi-million dollar
industry built around publishing or broadcasting the answers to just
 those type of questions.

And it is not a recent phenomenon.

Human beings thrive on gossip. And are all about ferreting out the
ugly truth about other human beings. Or about exploiting the rumors
just to pass the time. And to eliminate boredom. Gossiping seems to
be part of the psychological make-up of our species. Many seedy
supermarket tabloid magazines thrive on this particular human foible.

So, you might. Or might not be surprised to learn that Whitney has a
new album/cd on the way. Perhaps she - and her publicist - decided
now was the best time for her to bare her soul on national television.

 But why?

Maybe I'm a true cynic, but what was the true purpose of her television
interview with Diane Sawyer wednesday night? To promote the new
album? Or to answer questions about her personal life? Perhaps to
accomplish both in a single sitting?

I wish nothing but the best for Whitney Houston. She along with fellow
R&B songstress Mariah Carey, are among this author's favorite female
singers. Both have been abundantly blessed with talent. But in my
opinion, Whitney or Mariah don't in any way "owe" the public a thorough
delineation of the intimate and deeply personal details of their private
lives. And I could care less anyway.

As long as Whitney is not a bank robber and languishing on the F.B.I's
Ten Most Wanted list. Or as long as she is not running for public office.
Her personal life is irrelevant. Or on the other hand, it is relevant. But only
 up to a certain point.

Yes. -- It is absolutely correct that no one is going to buy a CD of someone
they don't like and/or respect. So a child molester or murderer certainly
isn't going to be on most people's "have to buy list." But in saying that.
If you truly don't appreciate someone's person. Or if you don't have a
warm and fuzzy feeling in your heart about them. Then why would you
 purchase their music cd anyway?

Is an interview-as-confession on a television newsmagazine show really
 going to change your perception?

 -- At all?

 I doubt it.

I believe the public mea culpa that some celebrities needlessly put
themselves through, is so hypocritical and tiresome. So my personal
 advice to Whitney Houston is...

 Shut Up!!
