 No Way Out 
 { Madelyne Toogood and Her Self-Made Hell }

 Everyone has seen the videotape by now. Grainy footage of an
 enraged blonde-haired young woman slapping and punching at
 her defenseless young child.

 The woman on that tape is Madelyne Toogood. 

 The blonde hair is gone now, and Madelyne in the company of her 
 lawyer, is busy making the talk show circuit. She is eager to accept 
 responsibility for what she did. Saying again, and again, that her 
 actions were wrong, and there is no excuse for what she has done.

 Well Madelyne is right. There is no excuse for what she has done.
 And this was probably not the first time that little girl has been
 subjected to that type of treatment. There is no way to prove that, 
 of course. But the kind of horriffic behavior that was seen on that 
 videotape, is most likely indicative of a pattern of abusive behavior
 that has been going on for some time.

 There are reports now, that Madelyne will throw herself upon the
 mercy of the court and attempt to enter into a plea bargain with
 the prosecutors office. If this occurs Madelyne should be treated
 fairly. She should not be treated as a celebrity offender just because
 this incident has garnered the attention of the nationwide media.
 No prosecutor should be allowed to build his or her's reputation 
 upon this case.

 But this kind of brutal child abuse can not be tolerated in our society.
 Jail time is probably warranted. Probation just cannot suffice in this
 instance. And the little girl will likely end up in permanent foster care 
 if some "responsible" family members cannot be found to trust with 
 her care. The time for Madelyn to seek treatment and ask for understanding 
 and compassion, was before she placed herself at the center of this 
 firestorm of nationwide indignation.

 It is a Hell of her own making.
