Hurry down to your local
Walmart boys and girls. You'll need
to purchase a new pair
of rubber boots. MSNBC has tanked.
No...the perennial ratings
loser has not hung out the "for sale"
sign. Instead the blue
suits at MS..."I'm Lost, I Can't See" have
decided to get down
and dirty, and wallow around in the gutter
with FOX News.
It is official now. MSNBC
has turned hard right.
You'll need those boots
now at MSNBC to navigate around in
the same dirt and horse+%#ure
that's become common-place at
FOX News. Arrogant,
loud-mouthed guests, who will repeat any
old unsubstantiated
rumor or say anything about anybody.
{
Clinton-haters and Jackson-haters, the line starts on the right }
Guests that would never
qualify for a ten minute conversation
on "Meet The Press"
or "Face The Nation." And outrageous,
sanctimonious hosts
who behave as if their way is the only way.
-- And hardly a "real"
liberal in sight.
Here are the names of
the new MSNBC hosts. Any doubt which
way MSNBC is tilting
now?
*Michael Savage
*Dick Armey
*Jesse Ventura
*Joe Scarborough
No wonder they ran Phil
Donahue off. He should be jumping for
joy instead of lamenting
his firing. Because surely Phil didn't belong
in association with
this bunch of characters. If the blue suits were
going to go this route,
why'd they hire Donahue in the first place?
-- And give him only
six months to build an audience.
MSNBC deserves credit
for one thing. When they decided to change
directions, they didn't
go about it half-way. Hey, if you can't beat 'em.
Join em. --
But boy did they ever run up the white flag. Has ever a
network repositioned
itself so radically. - So quickly.
The current mood of the
country, admitedly, is one of coarseness,
mean-spiritedness, religious
sanctimony, and contempt for those
individuals who hold
the minority viewpoint. Fox talk show hosts,
such as Sean Hannity,
and Bill "You Know Damn Well, I'm A
Conservative" O'Reilly
exploit this national temperment wonderfully.
Obviously MSNBC thinks
the likes of the abrasive Michael Savage,
and the buffoonish Jesse
Ventura can do the same thing for their
ratings that the likes
of Hannity and O'Reilly have managed over
at FOX News.
Liberals tolerate. Conservatives
denegrate. This is the main reason
why conservative talk-radio
is a consistent ratings winner. It's not
only the message. Which
is a legitimate message. But the manner
in which the message
is delivered to the public. Can anyone say
Rush Limbaugh? -- It
is a hoot to hear people berated and criticized.
And labeled as anti-American
or unpatriotic. Or worse yet, referred
to in the most sarcastic
manner imaginable as left-wing sissies and
feminist nazis.
My, my, my....
Conservatives excell
at this kind of labeling of political enemies.
Liberals simply do
not.
Now that there will be
two of these right-of-center news networks.
The standards of television
journalism will inevitably sink even lower.
If Michael Savage succeeds
on television - with the same methods
and mannerisms he has
used on radio - who on earth will Fox News
hire to counter him?
The thought is too discouraging to even
contemplate.
Again, cable television
has proven itself a disappointment.
Outrageousness and appealing
to the basest of instincts of the
audience, is always
the first choice of management. Pure entertainment
value has won handily
over substance and decorum. And the
line that once existed
between "entertainment" and "news" is
no wider across than
the blurry orbit of an electron.
This wholesale abandonment
of the middle by MS...."I'm Lost, I
Can't See" is a terrible
omen. Who needs Jerry Springer when the
same manner of nonsense
can be viewed nightly on a cable "news"
channel.
