The
Unremarkable Death of Mir Aimal Kasi
{
Just Another Angry Arab }

Back in 1993 the machine
gun assault outside of the gate at the CIA offices
in Langley Virginia
was big, big news. The murderer - Mir Aimal Kasi -
raked the cars of innocent
Americans with the deadly spray from an AK47.
Kasi quickly disappeared
and was a fugitive from justice for four years,
until his capture in
Pakistan in 1997.
Kasi's act was frightening
in an of itself. So many questions were yet to
be answered - or even
asked back in 1993. Did Kasi act alone? Were there
more murderous terrorists
in the United States? Was the attack at the CIA
a part of a larger conspiracy?
One that stretched far beyond Mir Aimal Kasi?
Now much is known about
Mir Aimal Kasi. --- On this the date of his
death by lethal injection.
He was merely an angry Arab. A man incensed at
the way Muslims were
treated around the world. In his opinion, mistreated
and taken for granted,
because of the hostile governmental policies of the
United States of America.
So on his own apparently, Kasi decided it was
time to take up arms,
and teach the U.S. government a lesson. And so within
the brain of this angry
man, a plot was concocted to get some Americans.
And what better place
than at the very gates of the hated Central Intelligence
Agency.
Forward to 2002.
Osama Bin Laden is America's
greatest enemy. - At least in a rhetorical sense.
And Pakistan, the land
of Kasi's birth was a major factor in the American
effort to drive the
Taliban out of Afghanistan. Without the assistance and
cooperation of the Pakistani
goverment, the war against the Taliban would
have been much more
difficult. And certainly more costly in American lives.
One angry Arab against
the World's last standing superpower. Kasi's
effort was futile from
the very start. His life is wasted. -- Gone now. He is
but a footnote in the
greater story that is the battle against Osama Bin Laden,
Al Qaeda, and Fundamentalist
Islam. There is a worry of retaliatory attacks
in response to Kasi's
execution, but those warnings only serve to highlight
that Al Qaeda is an
inconvenience. { although a major one } A car bomb here.
A kidnapping and murder
somewhere else. Painful indeed for those on the
business end of these
attacks, but nevertheless futile in the greater scheme
of things.
All the angry Arab men
with AK47's cannot change the world. Or defeat the
United States and its
allies. This is a battle of cultures. And has been asked
so many times before.
Where are the moderate Arabs who are the only hope
for the Middle East?
For they are the engine - the force - that must recapture
the minds and the imagination
of Arab youth. The U.S. - Osama Bin Laden,
notwithstanding, is
a false dragon. The lack of educational opportunites,
personal freedoms, the
denial of rights for both men and women to express
their opinions freely,
and the intolerance of cultural and religious diversity, are
the stagnating
force that have rendered the Islamic world to secondary status.
It is not the fault of
the West.
Islam must find a way
to modernize and to integrate with the modern world
more effectively. By
default, Indonesia - despite its tolerance for dictators -
was just such an example.
The world's largest Islamic state. A state that was
not backward looking
- but was a brilliant example of what a tolerant, and
stable Islamic society
could become. And now the infection that is fundamentalist
Islam has spread there.
Many moderates in that Asian archipelago feel
threatened. Perhaps
the Indonesian experiment in a more modern form of
Islam is on its death
bed.
How many more hapless
murderers like Mir Aimal Kasi will there be? Angry
Muslim men full of rage
against America. The false dragon. For the real demon
is within Islamic society
itself. Certainly, neither the entire world - nor
even
the
entire Middle East -
will ever be pulled backward into the Dark Age that
the Islamic Fundamentalists
would have us live in.
They will suffer their
fate alone.
