 Memorial At Ground Zero

As the first anniversary of Sept. 11th approaches the inevitable
discussions have begun about what to do with Ground Zero. A few
weeks ago several architectual proposals were presented to the
public and were met with overwhelming indifference.

This was not at all surprising. It's going to be a very difficult task to
gather a concensus about what to do with Ground Zero. That empty
space at the south end of Manhattan is hallowed territory now. As it
 should be.

But the question remains. What-to-do-with-the-land. Well, here's one
strong vote for building the most beautiful, ambitious, and daring new
buildings as possible. The last thing that's needed on that site is empty
space, no matter how well-manicured, or elegantly designed.

Ground Zero is in the heart of the Manhattan commercial district. To
turn that area into some overdone memorial park is the exact symbolic
victory that the Taliban, and the immoral and deranged, Osama Bin Laden
 were seeking.

The absolute best memorial for the thousands who died on Sept.11th,
2001 is for Ground Zero to be made whole again. It is not callous to
state that life is for the living. So then let us live. Some staid memorial
area in the middle of Manhattan is the wrong kind of response.

It is a tragedy that majestic buildings that tower above all others may for
many generations to come never seem the innocent architectual wonders
they once were assumed to be. Such is the reality of this moment in our
history. How long shall it be before office workers feel secure upon the
80th, or 90th, or 100th floor of some great structure. It may well be a
very long time indeed before new buildings of inspiring height, in the US
or elsewhere are commercially feasible, again.

But we still must build something grand.

Ground Zero and the surrounding commerical areas deserve to be as
vibrant, impressive, and important to the global economy, as they were
before that infamous day last year. A tower of whithering height may
not be the answer. But a manicured park is simply not enough of a tribute
to those who tragically lost their lives.

Let us demonstrate to the evil that struck at us that we are not defeated
or cowed. Sending airborne missles to kill innocent civilians was the kind
of cowardly act that shall never intimidate America. Let the memorial at
Ground Zero be a multitude of confident workers at their desks, in gleaming
new buildings of great dimension and vision. A living memorial of august
men and women from many nations, proud to live and work in the financial
 capital of the world.

In the heart of New York City.

 In the U.S.A.
