The High
Cost Of George Bush's Fatal Attraction
To Iraq and
Saddam Hussein.

September
11th, 2004 was a quiet peacful day, only highlighting the difficulty
that
Muslim fundamentalist terrorists face in carrying out their vicious, immoral,
and
cowardly acts. Three years have passed already, and despite the desperate
saber-rattling
of Osama's second in command, Al Qaeda has so far been unable
to
accomplish anything else on American soil.
Lest
the present administration get carried away congratulating themselves,
there
is much that G.W. has to answer for. Whether Democrat or Republican,
1000
dead American soldiers in Iraq - in a war that the entire world now knows
was
undertaken under false pretenses - is significant. And
what exactly did
these
conscripts die for? There weren't any
WMD's to find. And the link
between
the deposed Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda existed only in the bad
intelligence
coming out of the CIA. 1000 American men and women have so
far
died in G.W's vanity war so that he can state emphatically that he is a
tough
guy.
A "War President" unafraid to strike back at terrorists. Except
the
terrorists
were all in Afghanistan, not Iraq. And the militant insurgents that
are
disrupting Iraq society today, are only on Iraqi soil because this misguided
"War
President" created the very conditions under which they now thrive.
A
car bombing by the side of the road. A soldier felled by a sniper's bullet
under
the
blazing afternoon sun. Aid workers kidnapped. Indigent imported restaurant
kitchen
helpers slaughtered in vivid color on videotape. All the unfortunate
consequences
of a war that was undertaken to ensure that freedom-starved
Iraqis
can one day worship their God in peace. All the better for the next despot
who
will be able to summarily cancel elections and take up exactly where the
hated
Saddam Hussein left off. -- Oh, but perhaps by that time, some other
American
president will have cleaned up George Bush's mess.
And
the 1000 dead will be long buried and forgotten.
So
much is going on in the world today that gets scant attention from this
administration.
But,
it is not necessary to look hard to find examples of how
tenuous
is the grip of democracy when people do not realize how precious
are
their new found freedoms. American ally Vladimir Putin is step-by-step
restructuring
the Russian government so that the citizens across the former
Soviet
Union will have less influence in the decisions that will determine
their
lives, and their livelihood.
[
yet another world leader using the "fight against global terrorism" excuse
to
broaden
the authority of his office, and to deflect criticism from political
decisions
that would undergo much greater scrutiny in more peaceful times... ]
Putin
apparently is more impressed by the economic success of the orderly
communist
dictatorship to the south, than he is with any Western ideas of
a
free and open government. The hope of Russia joining Europe in "spirit"
if
not in reality is but an idealistic dream. Putin is old KGB to the
core. He has
no
love of freedom or liberty. The concepts are alien to him.
The
sly goings-on in Moscow represent a far greater threat to world security
than
anything in Saddam Hussein's non-existent WMD laboratories. A return
to
the mindless conflicts of the Cold War years is a disturbing thought.
If
only our "War President" were paying attention.
