Most Dedicated Forensic Scientist

Now that the alledged
murderer of Laci Petersen is
under arrest, America
has a chance to visit once again
with Dr. Henry Lee.
The famous medical "expert" from
the O.J. Simpson case.
Oh my. You know Dr. Lee
don't you? He's the kindly
Chinese gentlemen who
visits all the talk shows whenever
there is a famous murder
investigation. You can find him
on Larry's show. Or
on Greta's. Or maybe you've even
caught him featured
in a documentary or two.
What is fantastic about
Dr. Lee is that he is able to make
complex medical "issues"
seem understandable to those
in the audience who
don't know a lot about blood,
bones, and human tissue.
Not that easy a thing to to do,
one would imagine for
a man who probably has more
graduate degrees than
most people have letters in their
last name. Along with
other "noted" forsenic investigators
such as Dr. Cyril Wecht
and Dr. Michael Baden. -- Great
television commentators,
themselves. Who can blame
these men for enjoying
a bit of camera time now and
again?
But there's something
about Dr. Lee that is absolutely
maddening!
What is it you ask?
Dr. Lee always speaks
patiently in a voice heavy with an
Asian accent.
His English is sometimes imprecise. Although,
the meaning in his words
always comes through clearly.
But, be sure to bend
your ear to the television or you'll
miss what he's saying.
It is easy to wonder how a person
who can master levels
of advanced science far beyond
common understanding.
And yet Dr. Lee sounds as if
he's never bothered
to learn the subtleties of spoken
English. In all
his years in the U.S! And surrounded by
all those preppy types
in the halls of academia.
I don't know. Everytime
I see Dr. Lee on television, I have
trouble suspending
my disbelief that he always speaks
in such a stereotypical
manner. I don't believe it. It is just
too much. Sort of like
watching some famous African-American
ballplayer on Leno or
Letterman coming across like "Allen
Iverson" -- You know
what I mean. Really urban.
But when away from that
particular forum, or during an
appearance on a "serious"
BET talk show. { the kind BET
has cancelled in
the past year } This same ballplayer appears
as polished and together
as a Harvard grad.
Or for a second, imagine
a middle-aged country music star
speaking to a sell-out
crowd between songs at a concert.
His speech is full of
witticisms and country twang. The
fella could fit right
in on "Hee Haw." Surely, you remember
that old show! It ran
in syndication forever. "Hee Haw"
featured country legends
Buck Owens, Grampa, Minnie Pearl,
and a star in his own
right, Roy Clark!
Now imagine this same
fella' talking on the phone to an
accountant. Suddenly
"Onery Bill Johnson" sounds like
ordinary "Mr. Bill Johnson"
of Memphis, Tennessee. -- All
that exaggerated southern
accent is just gone, gone, gone.
There's no question that
an easily recognizable public
persona can be good
for the bottom line. And we all love
a fat bottom line. Personality
sells movies. It moves books.
But whenever Dr. Lee
is on, I can't help but imagine he's
having a wicked time
as America's most admirable forensic
scientist. The wise
Chinese fellow full of sage advice. He's
the one who will easily
solve the puzzle, while the rest of
us are left scratching
our heads.
That's Dr. Henry Lee,
always one step ahead of the bad
guys.
There can be no doubt.
But, c'mon. Does he always
speak like that? In fractured
English.
Or is Dr. Lee having
a bit of fun at our expense.
What do you think?
