Bush's
War

The time of reckoning
is upon us. Last night, George W. Bush
declared that the Iraqi
leader Saddam Hussein, and Hussein's
sons, had 48 hours to
leave that nation and go quickly into exile.
Obviously, this will
not happen.
So, it is on. Bush finally
gets the war to liberate Iraq that has
been the primary focus
of his administration, save for managing
the battle against international
terrorism and Al Qaeda.
What an awful journey
it has been to get to this point. The
unfinished business
from the first Gulf War. { hindsight being
20/20 } When
Saddam should have been removed from office.
International sanctions
against the Iraqi government that made
the Iraqi people
suffer. The cat and mouse game Saddam has
played with UN inspectors
in the past, and most recently as
well. And of course,
the tragedy of September 11, 2001.
Saddam has to go. And
now that thousands of U.S. troops and
military equipment are
in the region, there is no way that the U.S.
and Britain { our
most steadfast ally } can pause now. Or tolerate
any more useless delays.
There is a war to be fought and won.
There are also many other
facts to reflect upon. France betrayed
the
United States. As a sovereign nation
France certainly has
the right to oppose
and denounce US military intentions against
Saddam Hussein. But
Jacques Chirac's goverment crossed the
line when his administration
actively manuevered to frustrate U.S.
intentions. -- Such
as demanding several African nations { who
are themselves independent
and sovereign } to potentially stand
against the most recent
proposed British-US resolution that was
ultimately dropped at
the last moment.
France's incomprehensible
actions are
not those of an ally. But
of a nation deeply chagrined
and jealous of the military and cultural
might of the upstart
nation across the Atlantic. France badly wants
to be "the" voice
of continental Europe. And a strong voice against
US influence in this
post Cold War world. Only the passage of many
months, if not years,
will tell the story of how extensively relations
between the USA and
France have been damaged.
Finally. For those on
the left who spoke out forthrightly against
Bush's War. It is
now time to lessen the volume and speak a little
more circumspectly.
For it is our brave young men and women
who will soon be in
harm's way. Not the eager gray-haired politicians
and military generals
who will direct the war from afar. The young
men and women in the
desert must believe absolutely that we
support the sacrifices
they are being asked of -- in the name of
God and country.
Let us hope that Bush's
War is decisive and quick. That Saddam
Hussein has no surprises
that will lengthen the conflict significantly,
if at all. And as the
tattered cloth that is the broken nation of Iraq
is mended. We still
our breath that an awful rend does not suddenly
appear somewhere else
in the delicate fabric of that part of the
world.
