The Mysterious Oddysey of Bison Dele

We have a mystery on our hands. Where is Bison Dele? For those
of you, unfamiliar. Bison Dele was a former college star, and a
better-than-average NBA talent who was once known by his given
 name, Brian Williams.

Bison Dele began his strange odyssey at the University of Maryland
where he stayed for all of one year, and left to go play ball in the West.
Ripping his coach as he did so. The in-over-his head Bob Wade.

 What a strange beginning.

Bob Wade was hired by the University of  Maryland after Lefty Driesell
was booted out under bad circumstances. Wade was the first black
basketball coach hired by the University of Maryland and was made
 - at the time - to feel most unwelcome by the student body, and the
very white old-boyish Atlantic Coast Conference. Some would even go
so far as to say Wade received the "n-word" treatment.

Then, how strange it was to see this pioneer coach ripped and criticized
in the press by his prize recruit. A fellow African-American. { Bison
Dele is of mixed racial heritage, being both Black and Native American }.
As background, Wade was hired by the University under the formal
recommendation of John Thompson { the famous ex-Georgetown
University coach } to John Slaughter. Also the pioneer black athletic
director at the University of Maryland at the time.

Thompson and Slaughter were angrily resented by the student body
as two black men who dared to network together at a white southern
school, to hire a novice black coach. -- Without consulting them. In a
word, not paying attention to the "we want a white name coach"vibe
on campus. It was ugly. { Georgetown and Maryland are also local
basketball rivals, although the teams play in different athletic conferences
This was the 1980's but now it seems a lifetime ago, as so much has
changed since then. One being the public perception of the ACC as
hostile to the hiring of blacks in anything more than token positions as
 assistant coaches.

Dele - some suggest - at the behest of his mother, rudely criticized the
vulnerable Wade. { who didn't last long at Maryland } And so began
the unusual oddysey of this strange young man.

Once in the N.B.A., Dele's { he officially changed his name to Bison
Dele in 1998 } talent was apparent. But, this momma's boy quickly
gained the reputation of being a strange one. He was different. Maybe
a bit of flake. Not in the Dennis Rodman kind of way, but a mysterious
young talent who rarely socialized with other players. We won't apply
the loner label here, as that's a wildly over-used phrase.

Despite his different-ness Dele was liked for the most part, by his
teammates, and certainly gave his all on the court. He even played
alongside Michael Jordan on the 1997 NBA Championship Chicago
Bulls. On the private side, Dele was also known as being generous
with his money. But surprisingly, this talented young man simply
walked away from the game in 1999. He was still in his prime money
earning years. And the contract he walked away from was worth,
 $36,000,000 dollars. -- No exaggeration.

So where is Bison Dele now?

There is a perception that he is dead. Perhaps by the hand of his own
 brother.

It's been two months already, since Dele, his girlfriend, and another
man were seen on a boat in the South Pacific. Perhaps, some speculate,
they were taken by pirates. A hazard in that part of the world right
now. But in this same time period Dele's brother, Miles Dabord has
been in trouble with the law for trying to use Dele's identity to make
expensive purchases. Dabord was in possession of some of Dele's
checks, his credit cards, and passport. He is currently a wanted man
by the F.B.I. in the U.S. and by the authorities in Tahiti. Where Dele's
boat was found recently, unattended and unoccupied, in harbor.

 What a mess.

This one has all the elements. An enigmatic, wealthy, ex-NBA ballplayer.
A beautiful young girlfriend. The tropical island paradise of Tahiti.
And perhaps, murderous wrong-doing at the hands of a jealous sibling.

This one has probably already ended badly.

Is Bison Dele truly dead? If not, then where is he?
