A great thing has happened in America recently. One of the bastions of
the "Good Ole' Boy" mentality has had to blink. Because of the political
pressure applied by a rather obscure women's group known as The
National Council Of Women's Organizations, the Master's Golf Tournament
will be televised commercial-free in 2003.

Augusta National Golf Club which runs and organizes the Master's Golf
Tournament does not have any women as members. And Augusta National
does not stand alone in that outrage. Across America prestigious golf
clubs refuse to accept females as members. This all adds to the well-deserved
reputation of this particular professional sport, and everything surrounding
it, as defined by class, race, and lastly gender.

Many prestigious Golf Clubs do not have African-Americans as members,
let alone any members from other racial groups. In fact, at many of the
same tournaments the great Tiger Woods plays at, the only African-Americans
you will see are in menial service-type jobs. It seems these blacks are good
enough to employ in the washrooms, but not have seated in the clubrooms.

Sure these are private clubs and they are within the law to accept or not
accept, whomever they want as members. But, is it any doubt that professional
golf expects to draw hundreds of thousands of female and African-American
viewers to the televised broadcasts of their tournaments? And to profit from
their patronage? This goes without saying. That is what makes the stance
of organizations such as Augusta National so hypocritical. They bemoan
the pressure being applied by outside groups. How similar are their carefully
worded denunciations to what the Southern Segregationists used to say about
"Yankee agitators from the North" back in the days of  Jim Crow.

There is an ugly injustice here, and those good ole' boys just don't see it.

So, Augusta National will go it alone without any corporate advertising in
2003, because of the feared political discomfort that the N.C.O.W. was to
cause sponsors of the tournament. Maybe their decision will backfire. Yes,
Augusta National is a well-heeled organization and can do without the corporate
sponsorships. But how eerie and strange will that silence be, the day of the
 broadcast.

The silence of the entire outside world. -- Not a car ad, a beer ad, a candy
ad, or anything. Just a too proud old organization, alone, and trapped in a
time warp of its own creation.
