It was certainly a surprise announcement today when Charlton Heston
on videotape, revealed that he was suffering symptons compatible with
Alzheimers disease. I will tell you this. Charlton Heston was/is far from
one of my favorite actors. In fact, he was in my opinion one of the most
overated of the old studio actors. A thespian with a wooden face, blessed
with a great voice, but limited ability.

From that era, I much prefer Kirk Douglas. A man who could play any type
of role. Good guy. Bad guy. Smooth guy. Dumb guy. Or even the classy
Burt Lancaster. Or the always it seemed, just up from the gutter Robert
Mitchum, with those sleepless, sleazy, hooded eyes, that were his trademark.
A man with an understated charisma that could make a small movie glitter.

Charlton Heston is way down the list. Down below Peck, and Bogart, and
Brando. Below Cooper, and Grant, and Stewart. Perhaps even below the
equally bland, and as overrated, Henry Fonda.

 I could name others.

It is inevitable Charlton Heston will always be remembered most for his
roles in biblical movies. No need to name them. They are anachronisms
now, from a bygone Hollywood era. Such overdone costume operas
afforded Heston a stature that was revealed to be hollow and thin
whenever he was seen in lesser roles, in lesser movies, that other more
talented men could still carry and make enjoyable.

Planet of The Apes. What an awful, awful film.

Yet, when his best days in Hollywood were long-past, Heston re-made
himself as a spokesperson for the NRA. I disagree with practically
everything this self-righteous, white-priviledged man stands for. But,
at least he became a true spokesman. And not just a show pony for the
right-of-center. Not one of those shallow actors, athletes, muscians, or
talk-show hosts, that come election time, suddenly their personal opinions
are important, simply because of who they are, as if the public is supposed
to care what they think because they can carry a musical note, or dunk
 a basketball.

No, Charlton Heston is a bit different, I think. He deeply believes in his
right-wing causes. The personal time he's devoted to those causes proves
that. The travel. The speeches. It's certainly not a part-time thing. It's a
job. And that's not acting. Or pretend.

 That's real.
