 The Execution of Aileen Wuornos

 The LadyKiller has been put to death. No, this time we don't mean
 a man who goes about murdering women. But a much rarer creature.
 The female serial killer. A woman who commits murder for sport. Or 
 for whatever insane reason that makes sense only to her.

 Aileen Wuornos was executed by lethal injection Wednesday
 morning at approximately 9:30 am. She went on her way, stating 
 that she would be back, "with Jesus...big mothership and all." How 
 strange it was that her last few agonizing days on death row received 
 surprisingly little coverage in the national press or on T.V. It never 
 became a BIG story. Especially in that this woman was the first serial 
 killer of her gender of any notoriety.

 Perhaps female serial killers just don't hold the fascination that
 male serial killers do. Or was it because the dear departed Aileen 
 wasn't much in the looks department. She wasn't a hot babe. No
 sexy black widow creature here. So, there probably won't be a
 sensational new movie in a couple of years, "The Aileen Wuornos 
 Story."

 Then again, maybe not. There is no underestimating the depths
 to which Hollywood movie-makers will sink to exploit a subject.

 It is difficult to argue against the death penalty in this particular case, 
 because sociopathic criminals can be such unsympathetic creatures. 
 Regardless, Aileen Wuornos is now dead. Put to death by the state 
 of Florida. A deeply disturbed and emotionally troubled woman by 
 any definition. 

 And what has been gained?

 Her victims still rest silently in their graves. Nothing has changed
 except there is one less inmate taking up space on death row. In a 
 killing state such as Texas where they seem to execute prisoners by 
 the dozen, maybe the wardens can readily proclaim how much 
 money they are saving the tax payers by having less prisoners to 
 feed, clothe, and board.

 Florida can't quite make that statement. -- Yet.

 Jesus and the mothership. Who knows? Who cares? But this unnoticed
 little execution says much more about the the social conflicts that still 
 plague our so-called enlightened American culture, than it could ever 
 have said about the mad confusion that reigned for so long, within 
 Aileen Wuornos' tortured mind.
